Daryn Freedman Named Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Penn State Greater Allegheny

McKeesport, PA - Penn State Greater Allegheny in McKeesport has selected Daryn Freedman as the new Head Men's Basketball Coach. Freedman has more than 25 years of basketball coaching experience at the professional, collegiate and high school levels.

Freedman comes to Greater Allegheny from Point Park University, where he served 2 seasons as Associate Head Men's Basketball Coach.  During his time at Point Park, he helped guide the Pioneers to 2 straight River States Conference playoff appearances and brought recruiting classes which included several highly rated high school players and 2 Junior College All-Americans.

During his career, Freedman spent close to 10 Seasons as an assistant to Hall of Fame Coach John Calipari.   At UMass, Freedman served as a student assistant and practice player for teams that went to the 1994-95 NCAA Tournament Elite Eight and 1995-96 NCAA Final Four.

After earning a degree in Sports Management from UMass, Freedman followed Calipari to the Brooklyn/New Jersey Nets where he served as a Coaching Staff assistant and worked in the basketball operations and scouting departments.  From there, Freedman would follow Calipari twice more, first to Philadelphia where he served as his assistant while Calipari was an associate head coach under Larry Brown of the Philadelphia 76ers in 1999-00, and again to the University of Memphis where he served as Director of Basketball Operations.

Prior to the 2005 – 2006 season, Freedman joined Ron Everhart's Northeastern staff as Assistant Men's Basketball Coach. At Northeastern, Freedman helped put together one of the top ranked recruiting classes in the country. Following a 19-win season, led by future NBA player Jose Juan Barea, Everhart and Freedman headed to Duquesne University in Pittsburgh to rebuild the struggling program.

At Duquesne, Freedman was recognized as one of the top Mid Major College Basketball recruiters in the country. Duquesne's 2006 recruiting class was rated Top 25 Nationally and led by Atlantic 10 Rookie of The Year Robert Mitchell. Freedman also served as the co-Interim Head Coach for Duquesne's road win over AP Top 25 Boston College during the 2006-07 season.

Freedman also experienced success as a Head Prep School and High School Boys Basketball Coach in Massachusetts and Pennsylvania and has worked as a Head Coach, Clinician and Commissioner at the famed Five-Star Basketball Camp. At Five-Star, Freedman coached several future NBA Stars including Lebron James, Chris Paul and Kevin Durant.

In addition to his degree from UMass, Freedman earned a Juris Doctorate at Seton Hall Law School in New Jersey. He currently serves as the President and Director of Basketball Stars of America Inc, one of the largest and most successful Youth Basketball Skill Development and Tournament Companies in the country. Freedman and his wife Dana reside in Robinson Township with their children Hannah & Max.
